Apple and Google team up to build a coronavirus tracking system

Apple and Google today announced they were partnering up on a contact tracing system that works on both iOS and Android that alerts people when they’ve had contact with someone who’s contracted coronavirus. This collaboration between the two big smartphone companies would help health officials effectively track the spread of the disease while (ideally) not violating users’ privacy. To help public health officials slow the spread of #COVID19, Google & @Apple are working on a contact tracing approach designed with strong controls and protections for user privacy. @tim_cook and I are committed to working together on these efforts.https://t.co/T0j88YBcFu — Sundar…

Report: iOS 14 will let you try out apps, no install required

Apple is apparently working on a way for iPhone users to use the features of apps without having to install them in its next iteration of iOS. In theory, you would be able to scan a QR code that allows you temporary access to the app — say for watching a video or looking at a social media post. The feature was spotted by 9to5Mac, who found it in code within an early iOS 14 build. The new API is codenamed “Clips,” which confuses me only slightly because Apple had a video-editing app by that same name a few years…

He also added that the company has open-sourced the design of its PB-560 ventilator, and it plans to ramp up production in its own factories to reach the goal of producing 1,000…

We’ve heard rumblings Apple is planning to release a new iPhone SE during the spring, but it turns out the device could launch way sooner than expected. According to a report by 9to5Mac, the iPhone SE 2 could launch as soon as Friday, April 3. Yeah, you read that date right. 9to5Mac cites a “highly trusted reader” in its report, claiming Apple could be planning on opening orders for the new iPhone tomorrow. Whether or not that’s the actual date, 9to5Mac is confident Apple plans on selling the device “very soon.” It’s worth noting the device was previously rumored to…

Apple accidentally leaks AirTags, its Tile-like item tracker

Apple‘s popularity means its products are some of the most leaked on the market, but it’s always nice when the leak comes from the source itself. As first reported by Appleosophy, Apple accidentally confirmed the existence of ‘AirTags,’ its Tile-like item tracker. We most recently reported on the AirTags back in January and rumors had been floating around for months earlier. But Apple today posted a support video — now deleted — which all but confirmed the tags. Assuming this wasn’t a belated April Fools video, it seems AirTags are not too far off. The deleted video did not directly deal…

Apple launches a COVID-19 information tool for the US

Apple has launched a new screening tool for the US in partnership with CDC (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). The tool, available both as a website and an iOS app, acts as an information center for people across the country. The tool also allows you to answer a bunch of questions to determine if you need to quarantine, take a screening test, or contact a medical professional. If you go on Apple’s website, and answer its questions, it gives you only two options as a result: Call 911 or don’t call 911. Which doesn’t seem very helpful when…

For those of you who are stuck at home and have extra time in this strange age of coronavirus, perhaps its time to learn a new skill. If you have a Mac, of course. Surprising no one, there’ll probably be a months-long iPhone 12 delay

Anyone who’s been watching the news over the past few months could’ve guessed there’d be an iPhone 12 delay, but now more details have surfaced about what this would potentially entail. Like clockwork, Apple‘s handsets are normally released in September. But, due to the coronavirus, this is looking to be in serious jeopardy. No, it’s not a huge surprise, but it’s now likely that this will be a months-long delay — with the devices potentially pushed back to next year. According to Nikkei Asian Review, Apple is facing an issue with the iPhone 12 on two main fronts: The supply…
