I’m so bored I got excited about installing the iOS 13.4 update

It shows the state I’m currently in that when I saw the iOS 13.4 update on the iPhone this morning I did a little fist bump in bed. Am I proud? No, but if I’m going to survive this lockdown, I need to take the little victories where I can. But yeah, Apple’s iOS 13.4 update is here, so go download it I guess? It’s not like there’s anything better to do. What’s that? Yeah, you’re right! It’s not just iPhones that are getting this update. A raft of Apple devices have received updates today, the most glorious of days. The 13.4…

May Apple’s AirPower charging mat live forever in limbo

I’m obsessed with Apple’s AirPower charging mat. Not with what it is — I mean, it’s just an unreleased wireless charger with an Apple logo, who gives a shit? — but with what it represents. For whatever reason, Apple’s AirPower charging mat has become the white whale of the tech world; a seemingly innocuous gadget that has inspired a thousand think pieces and, if the enthusiasm is to be believed, something many people would literally charter a ship and race around the ocean to get a glimpse of. You might’ve thought you heard the last of it after it was canceled. But…

Apple’s next iPhone could switch to sensor-shift image stabilization — here’s why that matters

It’s no surprise that Apple plans on improving the iPhone‘s camera this year, but a new report gives us a better idea of how the company might be planning on doing so. A new note by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors) claims Apple plans on introducing sensor-shift image stabilization on its largest iPhone this year. If true – and Kuo has a strong track record with Apple rumors – it could be one of the most important hardware changes Apple has made to its camera system since it added a second camera with the iPhone 7 Plus. Most optical…

Apple’s new sub-$1k MacBook Air finally ditches the dreaded butterfly keyboard

Time for celebration, MacBook fans! After all the issues with the butterfly keyboard, and Apple backtracking over this on its latest MacBook Pro, the company has made another positive step. So, say hello to Apple’s new MacBook Air, a machine equipped with what the company calls the “Magic Keyboard,” but whatever anyone with common sense would refer to as “the old keyboard that didn’t suck.” This new/old design will return to the scissor switch mechanism used on older MacBooks, meaning it should deliver a far more reliable experience. You can find out more about the differences between the butterfly and…

It’s finally happened: An iPad Pro with trackpad support (and better cameras)

In the past, Apple has made fun of Microsoft with its “What’s a computer?” commercial, mocking a laptop-like form factor, and claiming that an iPad can work as a laptop. Now, Apple has gone full laptop with its new iPad Pro, which now comes with support for a trackpad. The new iPad Pro also has an iPhone 11-like camera assembly on the back with a 12-megapixel primary camera and a 10-megapixel ultra-wide camera. It comes in two sizes — 11-inch and 12.9-inch — and it’s powered by Apple‘s own A12Z bionic chip. The company says the new iPad also features studio-quality…

How to stop your MacBook Touch Bar buttons changing all the damn time

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. Before I actually used Apple’s MacBook Touch Bar day-to-day, I thought it was amazing; a way of dragging laptops in the future. But I was wrong. Oh boy, I was wrong. Apple takes WWDC 2020 online over coronavirus fears

Apple today announced its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) would this year be held entirely online, for the first time in the conference’s history. The new event will be streamed online, as all Apple’s events have been in the past, but this time there will be no live component to the show, which has been a staple for over 30 years. This year’s WWDC will feature “a full program with an online keynote and sessions.” Apple also hinted we’d see news about the future of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS.
