Studio Ghibli scoops HBO Max by offering its films for digital purchase

Studio Ghibli, the legendary film studio that has been notoriously leery of digitally distributing its exceptional movies, will do just that later this month. The Tokyo studio’s entire catalog will be available on major stores, including Amazon and Apple TV. It’d previously inked an exclusive streaming deal with the upcoming HBO Max. So what does this mean for both the service and those who might be considering buying it? In October, Warner Media revealed it’d acquired the exclusive US rights to stream Ghibli’s films to its upcoming service, HBO Max. Needless to say, this was quite the feather in HBO‘s…

Watch: Performance-enhancing AI could change baseball forever

Meet Tipper, a convolutional neural network that lives on an Nvidia AI card. Its creator says it can predict whether a baseball pitch will land inside or outside of the strike zone. Tipper was developed by Nick Bild, a serial creator who seems to have an unquenchable thirst to create and innovate. He makes apps, trains neural networks, and literally has a gold badge in ‘problem solving’ on HackerRank. So yeah, the company that’s disrupting the tradition of theatrical film releases is now in the theater business. Netflix revealed it’d signed a lease agreement to “save the beloved institution” which it praised as “a symbol of prestige cinema.” Ted Sarandos, Netflix‘s CCO, said, “After 71 years, the Paris Theatre has an enduring legacy, and remains the destination for a one-of-a kind movie-going experience. We…

Netflix partners with Nickelodeon as Disney+ ensnares millions

An ancient military strategy suggests “the enemy of one’s enemy is one’s friend.” In the modern war to engage eyeballs, it seems at least a couple of the primary opponents of Disney are teaming up to create competing kid-friendly material. Specifically, Nickelodeon has struck a multi-year deal to produce new, original content for Netflix. The two companies will produce shows based on existing intellectual properties and all new ones. The two companies have already produced new series based on Nick’s existing properties, including Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus. They’re also reportedly working on a live-action series based on Avatar:…
