Coronavirus means no new emoji in 2021

The Unicode Consortium announced last week that it was pushing the release of Unicode 14 back by six months. Now instead of a new batch of emoji coming out in 2021, we won’t see the new ones until 2022. The reason is — you guessed it — COVID-19. Specifically, the Consortium is delaying the release of Unicode Standard Version 14.0, which would include a new batch of emoji characters. Mark Davis, President of the Consortium, said in a statement that attempting to adhere to the original schedule would put a strain on the Consortium’s volunteers: “Under the current circumstances we’ve heard…

Apple won’t let villains have iPhones in movies, Star Wars director says

This tidbit will ruin mystery movies forever, but there you go: Apple strictly forbids filmmakers from putting iPhones (or any of its other products) in the hands of villains — or so says director of Knives Out and Star Wars: Episode VIII, Rian Johnson. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the director divulged that Apple is pretty draconian about how its gadgets are portrayed in movies. “I don’t know if I should say this or not,” Johnson says, giggling. “[Apple lets] you use iPhones in movies […] [but] bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.” [Read: Here are the 9 titles Netflix purged…

‘Cool candidate’ Mike Bloomberg begs for your vote with Instagram memes

Presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg wants internet-savvy voters to know there’s a “cool” guy in the running — and what better way to appeal to younger audiences than memes… and Instagram. Bloomberg has contracted a bevy of influencer marketing agencies to run a satirical meme campaign in support of his election bid. Honestly, it’s not even that cringey for a paid campaign. I hate to give this boomer any credit, but some of the memes are actually kinda funny. Here are they: View this post on Instagram He does look pretty cool (and yes this is really #sponsored by @mikebloomberg) A…

Netflix is turning One Piece into a live-action series and I’m worried

In the world of anime and manga, there’s no franchise more enduring than Eichiro Oda‘s One Piece. Both show and comic have been running for over twenty years, maintaining remarkably consistent quality throughout. To that point, the story’s current arc is one of the series’ very best. So when Netflix announced it was adapting the story into a live-action series yesterday I was a little concerned. The history of live-action anime adaptations is… not good. The fact that the series has avoided one so far is something I considered a blessing, not a curse. BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: A One Piece live…

Hide the Pain Harold is the meme of the decade (according to Imgur)
